Álfablót is historically a rite of sacrifice to the Elves. And really, that's about as much as we know about the historical Norse Álfablót. There is a great deal of speculation about it and many different approaches. For our Grove, it is a time to honor Freyr, king of the Elves, and the Elves themselves be they ancestors, Land Spirits, or Hidden Folk. We make offerings to them and take time to remember those beings who aren't gods but live much closer to humankind.
The Álfar (in English Elves) are an ancient Norse class of beings about whom we know very little. Some say they are the male ancestors, while others say they are a Hidden People or Land Spirit type of beings. Regardless, some texts mention that the Vanir deity Freyr is king of Alfheim and thus of the Elves. In this case we will be honoring them by honoring our ancestors, the local spirits of the land, and the Hidden Folk. The Land Spirits are those numinous beings who live in nature around us such as the spirits of trees, plants, animals, and agricutlture. The Hidden Folk are the beings who live nearby to us in their own societies, often under the ground or in nature who are our spiritual cousins. As Pagan folk, we seek to honor these spirits as well as deities and ancestors.
